Don’t Run from Who God Called You to Be

Then He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord’s presence.”

At that moment, the Lord passed by. A great and mighty wind was tearing at the mountains and was shattering cliffs before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a voice, a soft whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ~1 Kings 19:11-13 (HCSB)

When I wrote Taming Julia, my first book in my Burrton Springs Brides series, the heroine had lived along the trail with her brother (Joshua Walker) for all the years she could remember. I knew in book two I wanted to explore why he was afraid to live in a town. I figured he had a deeper reason than I realized. 🙂

Like Joshua Walker, who is the hero in my new release Protecting Annie, I have found there can be times when we run away from the calling God places in our life…or at least get sidetracked for a while. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised though because as you can see from the verses above, even Elijah struggled with this. It’s interesting to me because he had recently witnessed God’s miracle at Mount Carmel. If you aren’t familiar with the story, you can read it in 1 Kings 18.

Elijah got scared and thought he was all alone, so he ran and hid. Have you ever felt like doing that? I know I have. During the past year or so, my husband and I have faced a lot of chaos in our lives. I kept thinking that when the chaos lessens, I’ll get back to writing again. Well, instead of it lessening it proceeded to get more and more. Finally, I prayed and told the Lord that I would write despite the chaos in my life. At the time I didn’t have any ideas for a new story…in fact it had been many years since I’d written a new book. Within a couple days of praying that prayer, the Lord gave me a new idea for book three in this series, currently titled Wooing Gertrude.

Just the way I learned my lesson of not running from God’s call on my life, so my hero will have to learn this spiritual truth.

How about you, have you ever struggled with this?

Jodie, thanks for sharing! I was in a similar situation this year. Once I got my cancer diagnosis, I stopped writing anything but my weekly stories.  About two weeks ago, I finally started working on another book again, and I’m loving it. I’m so glad you’re following your calling again. I enjoyed Protecting Annie so much, I’d love to see more of your stories!

And now, Protecting Annie!

After twenty years of living along the trail as a deputy U.S. Marshal, Joshua Walker takes a job as sheriff in Burrton Springs, Kansas so he can be closer to his sister. Only problem, she no longer requires his protecting so he’s unsure of his next step.

Annie McPherson needs a change after the death of her father. She accepts a position as schoolmarm, hoping her past won’t catch up with her. Life is good, except for the pesky sheriff who continues to question her ability to adjust to life in the west and creates confrontations at every turn.

When the irritating schoolteacher’s past and present collide, dragging him into the turmoil, Josh has to decide who he’s willing to defend.

Oh my goodness, this was a fun read! When straight-laced “Miss Prim and Proper” Annie moves out west, she gets more than she bargained for. Trying to adjust to her new life as a school marm, she falls into scrape after scrape, and the handsome local sheriff seems to be around for all of them! I’ve never seen two characters drive each other so crazy while being attracted to one another at the same time. The storyline is entertaining, enjoyable, and just plain fun. The secondary characters are well-developed and lovable. Both Annie and Sheriff Josh have secrets from their pasts they’d rather stay buried, but a persistent pastor helps them both deal with their pasts and find their way to God. The spiritual aspect to this book is deep and meaningful. A truly inspirational fun Christian romance.  This was the first book I’ve read by Ms. Wolfe, but it won’t be my last. In fact, Taming Julia takes place before Protecting Annie, and I now plan to go back and read that one!
